Meet Your Westchase UrgentVet Team

We understand what urgent means.

Our UrgentVet mission is simple: We want to be here for your pet when your primary care vet can’t. Our goal is to provide quick, convenient, affordable care 365 days a year. Think of us as urgent care for pets in Westchase, Florida. We’ll be there when you need us most.

I graduated from Michigan State University in 1979, then completed an internship at a large private practice outside of Boston. Since 1982, I have worked full time in 4 different emergency/critical care/specialty practices in Michigan and Florida.

I have been involved with the veterinary technology program at St. Petersburg College since 1995. I equally enjoy working in emergency practice and teaching, sharing my knowledge, experiences and enthusiasm for emergency medicine with veterinary technology students.

My family consists of Steve, my partner who puts up with all my animals! Crenshaw, a 2015 model tabby, Butterfly, 2018 DHS with splay legs, Isaac, 2005 model pit bull mix, Hercules 2007 model Heinz 57, Leia, 2007 model Chiweenie, and Chico 2014 model Chihuahua mix. And our 2 new fur babies- Larry, DSH DOB ~ 6/19 and Rudy, DOB ~ 4/19 a rowdy MN doberman.

My interests outside of work include walking with my dogs, reading, music and travel.

Dr. Berger is certified by the American Board of Laser Surgery in veterinary surgery, physics, and safety. He is well known for his leadership in veterinary laser surgery, and he has published a textbook on the subject as well as many peer reviewed papers and book chapters. He has also contributed to the improvement of patient care with practical advances in laboratory diagnostics and stem cell therapy.

After graduating from Cornell University in 1988, he owned and operated successful veterinary practices in Sutton, MA and Pawleys Island, SC for over twenty years. Later, he returned home to Florida with his family in search of a warmer climate. With strong interests in dentistry, ultrasound, and cardiology, he seeks to make comprehensive preventive care recommendations, accurate diagnoses, and relieve pain to ensure your pet enjoys a long and happy life.

Dr. Berger has been happily married to Gayle since 1991; they have three adult children (Grace-Ann, Benton, Samantha) and many pets. He enjoys fishing and SCUBA, gardening, anything food related, and spending time with family and friends.

As a Florida native, I graduated from the St. Petersburg Veterinary Technology program and gained my Certified Veterinary Technician credentials in 2005. My love for emergency medicine has carried me through my career. I have also trained and worked in Veterinary Ophthalmology, Internal Medicine, Dermatology, and Critical Care specialties during my 8 years at a major Veterinary Speciality hospital chain. However, Emergency medicine and being able to work one on one with my patients as an ICU nurse will always hold a special place in my heart. I enjoy teaching & spreading my knowledge, and have spoken at multiple Veterinary conferences. My special interests include ophthalmic emergencies, diabetic- related illnesses &  auto-immune disorders. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family- which includes my husband & daughter, plus our two dogs- Mona Lisa & Ham, our two cats Brooklyn & Mort, and our Goffin’s Cockatoo- Sammy. I particularly enjoy any day spent poolside or out on the boat, soaking up the Florida lifestyle! I am truly excited to be apart of the UrgentVet team and feel honored to be leading this amazing team!

Happy Pet Parents

“This place is great. My dog came in with a rash on his neck and was barking up a storm coming in the door. They got us in a room to calm him down and won his trust very quickly. We were treated with care and professionalism and they got us in and out very quickly. Perfect suppliment to our primary vet!”

Google Review

“There was no wait at all. They were patient and took their time calming our cat down. Somehow won her over cause she is definitely not a people cat beyond us. Figured out what the problem was gave her the medication she needed and now she is as good as new. They’re prices was very reasonable. We’ll definitely go there if we are ever in need of their services.”

“The staff are efficient, friendly and caring. They took good care of both my cat and me. It’s so great not to need an appointment and be able to get your pet the care needed.”
